The feeling of insight-a sudden, euphoric “cognitive snap” (Weisberg, 2015) signaling a breakthrough in the solution of a problem-is well-known to most of us. Introduction: insight and “insight problems” This opens the way to an exploration of potential links between solving constraints and the experiencing of the “Aha!” moment, which may shed light on the cognitive processes involved in insight solution. Future research is outlined which explores the specific mechanisms of clue difficulty. We argue that the same is true for cryptic crosswords, and that the key to the successful triggering of insight may lie in both the difficulty of the challenge and the degree to which misdirection has been used. Many have debated whether there is such a thing as an “insight problem” per se: typically, problems can be solved with or without insight, depending on the context. Uniquely among insight problems, considerations of expertise also come into play, allowing us to explore how crossword solving experts handle the deliberate misdirection of the cryptic clue more effectively than non-expert, but equally experienced, peers. We argue that the crossword paradigm overcomes many of the issues which beset other insight problems: for example, solution rates of cryptic crossword clues are high new material can easily be commissioned, leading to a limitless pool of test items and each puzzle contains clues resembling a wide variety of insight problem types, permitting a comparison of heterogeneous solving mechanisms within the same medium. Given the success with which a good quality cryptic crossword elicits “Aha!” moments, cryptics should prove highly valuable in exploring insight under lab conditions. We have evidence from a previous survey of cryptic crossword solvers that the “Aha!” moment is the most important driver of continued participation in this hobby, suggesting that the positive emotional “payback” has an energizing effect on a participant's motivation to continue solving. The mechanics of cryptic crossword clues are briefly explained, and the process is set into the insight literature, with parallels being drawn between several different types of cryptic crossword clues and other insight-triggering problems such as magic, jokes, anagrams, rebus, and remote association puzzles (RAT), as well as “classic” thematic or spatial challenges. A new protocol for eliciting insight (“Aha!”/Eureka) moments is proposed, involving the solving of British-style cryptic crosswords. Larger air compressors may have larger motors (making them more powerful) or larger tanks (meaning they can hold more air without being refilled). However, depending on your applications, you may be able to sacrifice some power - or want some more. How much power do you need? For home use, you'll typically need less than 150 PSI, so air compressors providing that level of force will be sufficient. What kind of air compressor do you want? While air compressors fall into two categories in terms of how they work (positive displacement and dynamic displacement), there are many other subcategories based on shape or function.Anton Maka/Roadshow 5 things to know before buying and using an air compressor If you have some bucks to spare for a premium unit, check out the Quincy QT-54. Otherwise, your machine will be susceptible to rust and damage - especially if you leave the remaining air in for an extended period of time. This is the sound of various parts of the compressor motor running and moving against one another anti-friction measures can only do so much.įinally, it's important to drain the remaining air out of your compressor each time you use it via the drain valve. Volume of operation typically depends on what kind of air compressor you have - electric compressors are often quieter than gas-powered ones - but some can get as loud as lawnmowers. You may notice that your air compressor seems very loud when it's operating. One of these gauges - the tank gauge - displays the air pressure inside the compressor's tank, while the other - the regulator gauge - displays the user's intended pressure for the tool or application being used. For instance, most air compressors have two pressure gauges, which may be confusing. That said, there are still some features and rules that are common across different kinds of air compressors - not necessarily universal, but found very frequently. These should be followed to the letter and supersede any general information about air compressors.Ĭalifornia Air Tools/Craftsman/Industrial Air Of course, each model will come with its own instructions, both for usage and safety. "Oil-free air compressors are cheaper, lighter, and need less maintenance. Nappy is the managing director of Hydramech, Western Australia's hydraulic cylinder specialist and mobile mining machinery supplier. However, if your usage at home will be limited, an oil-free compressor could be better for you as it requires less investment in both time and money." If you're going to be using it often and for longer periods of time, an oil air compressor might be better. "So, if you're looking for the best air compressor for you, it would depend on your usage. "While oil-free air compressors are lighter, require less maintenance and are often cheaper, it's important to note that oil-lubricated compressors are more durable," says King. Weighing just 32.5 pounds, the oil-free Craftsman CMEC6150K travels easily. If you have an oil-lubricated compressor, you should change the oil at least once a year. Oil-lubricated compressors also tend to last longer than oil-free compressors - up to 15,000 hours compared to up to 2,000. Again, each kind of compressor has its strengths and weaknesses - oil-lubricated compressors tend to be heavier and more powerful, while oil-free compressors are lighter, cleaner, and require less maintenance. While all air compressors need lubrication to function, in some, parts are coated with special chemicals designed to reduce friction. They also have smaller motors, which can make them less powerful than their heavier counterparts.Īnother distinction is whether a compressor is oil-free or not. Portable air compressors must be lighter than stationary air compressors, so their tanks tend to be on the smaller side. You also may prefer a portable air compressor if you want to be able to access compressed air in multiple locations. The size of the tank you need depends on the jobs you want to do larger jobs requiring more powerful tools will be easier if your compressor has a large tank. Typically, air compressor tanks range from one gallon to 60 gallons, though some are even larger, like the Industrial Air model shown above. Besides larger compressors typically offering higher CFM capabilities, the sizes of their tanks vary as well. California Air Tools/Craftsman/Quincy In what other ways do air compressors vary?Īnother method of differentiating air compressors is by size. Fifth, rather than standing on the ground, the tower’s rhomboid volume slips weightlessly up out of the surrounding granite pavement, from which it is separated by a 1-inch-wide perimeter slot. Fourth, the tower’s uniformly gridded and reflective surface, stripped of all elements that could suggest a third dimension, mutes the obtrusiveness of its enormous bulk and defers in all respects to the rich sculptural qualities of its much smaller neighbor. Third, notches bisecting the end walls accentuate the weightless verticality of these planes and make legible the tower’s nonrectangular geometry. Second, a bullnose corner detail facilitates the crucially important transition from trapezoidal base to rhomboid tower. First, the attenuated rhomboid plan-form, placed diagonally on its site, emphasizes the planar while minimizing the volumetric presence of the building, so as to effectively disembody the tower as seen from the square. To accomplish this, several aspects of the tower’s design may be cited as essential. We chose to deal with it not by creating a gratuitous distance between the two-this would only have exacerbated the problem-but by bringing them into close proximity while positioning and shaping the tower in such a way that it becomes the contingent satellite and the church the autonomous center in the composition. It perfectly illustrates my view that the architecture of a tall building is 99 percent logic and 1 percent art-but don’t you dare take away that 1 percent! The extreme disparity in size between the tower and the church was the central predicament we faced. Hancock Tower alongside Trinity Church in Copley Square (Steve Rosenthal)Īlthough the deceptive mutability of its image may suggest otherwise, there is nothing mysterious about the design of the Hancock Tower. Mercifully, however, an entrepreneurial T-shirt artist didn’t lose his opportunity to find a lighter side, with which I was able to outfit all three of my daughters in the otherwise miserable summer of 1973. Many in Boston saw all this as entirely just retribution for the egregious overreaching of the city’s largest corporation. The most notorious of these problems, publicized worldwide, was the failure of insulating glass units that necessitated removal and replacement of all 10,334 panels in the curtain wall. To compound the agony, during construction the building endured a series of mishaps that caused us and our client to experience the rare privilege of being, for almost half a decade, simultaneously despised and ridiculed. This brazen exercise of corporate arm-twisting on the part of our client naturally contributed to the widespread opinion, often explicitly conveyed to me in person, that my colleagues and I had prostituted ourselves professionally in accepting and carrying out this commission. Permission was granted not because I had succeeded in converting people to our way of thinking-for with only a few exceptions, I had not-but because had a building permit been denied, the Hancock company might well have carried out its threat to move its headquarters, with its 12,000 employees, to Chicago. But after nine months of acrimonious public debate, the necessary permits were obtained, and in the fall of 1968, construction began. What we saw as the right building in the right place at the right time was seen by almost everyone else, and above all by our fellow architects in Boston, as the wrong building in the wrong place at the wrong time. Indeed, the response in Boston was one of shock and horror. His proposition was to find a new meaning for the square, seizing the opportunity of the Hancock company’s need for office space to propose that “Copley Square should have its own tower.”Īs Cobb’s newest tower-the Four Seasons Hotel & Private Residences, One Dalton Street-nears completion, it’s time to hear in his own words how its bold precursor, the Hancock, came to be more than 40 years ago: In the late 1960s and early ’70s, the idealized image of the square had suffered from the intrusion of commercialism, and had, as Cobb observed, lost its meaning. It can only be understood as a response to the setting, Copley Square, where the tower stands adjacent to H. In this excerpt, Cobb describes the Hancock’s apparent adherence to the rules of typical office buildings yet acknowledges that the form of the “notched rhomboid” deviates from such expected patterns. The story of his best-known building, Boston’s John Hancock Tower (now 200 Clarendon), follows a dramatic arc from the controversies of its public review and construction to its recognition as a beloved icon of the city. After seven decades in practice, Henry Cobb has published his first collection of essays, interviews, lectures, and projects: Henry N. You’ll be able to either opt for a safe approach, by sticking to the rooftops and only fight by using stealthy techniques, or you can just grind, power up and beat your way through hordes of zombies. Truth be told, the gameplay loop is quite easy to explain. Unlike the first game, however, you won’t be able to run around in the dark for too long, as you’re also infected, and thus you’ll turn into one of the undead when left in the dark for too long. The latter is in many ways the most fun way to eventually progress through the story more easily. Exploring is rewarding as you get stronger by doing so, collect new items, and so on. For the most part, it’s up to you if you just want to follow the main quests and plow through the story, or you can also explore the world around you. This is, of course, not necessarily a bad thing. Some accents, however, feel a bit over the top or even too forced at times and this does take away a bit from the overall quality of the dialogues.ĭying Light 2 Stay Human is a fairly straightforward Action-RPG that offers more of the same content we’ve seen in similar games that came out during the last few years. Dying Light 2 also contains a lot of voiced dialogues, and for the most part, this is handled quite well. The OST never really tires and the sometimes subtle background tunes add a lot to the overall atmosphere of the game. The soundtrack is interesting and picks up the pace when the game gets a bit more hectic. The sound design of the game is quite good. Other than that, standard assets get recycled over and over, so much even that some locations are literal copy-pasted versions of one another. We noticed that a lot of character models get reused, both for the undead as well as the base character. Even though at a distance everything looks quite good, things get a bit muddy when inspecting things more closely. Some dialogue choices are optional, but they do flesh out the story more and give you some more information about the world as well.įor our review, we tried out the PS5 version of the game, and we were actually quite underwhelmed by the graphical prowess of the game. There are some in-game cutscenes here and there, but the meat of the story is delivered by talking to NPCs. The story is brought in an interesting way, mostly via dialogues.
